Steve: I was referring to all the research that is going on with symetrical implementations of digital subscriber lines which exceed many of the earlier capabilities patented by AMTX and adopted as the ANSI standard. Hayes is an example of a company that holds a widely used standard but which is now in financial trouble, by the way.

You bring up some valid shortcomings of cable modems and I am not a detractor against Amati. But just as *DSL promises to help the telco's in their attempt to increase bandwidth over their existing equipment, so do Zenith, Cisco and Microsoft have a solution for helping the cable companys retrofit their existing equipment so as to allow interactive services and entertainment on demand. Having this contract to, essentially retrofit or renovate all of the cable systems in the world, is what makes this such a winning prospect.
