Thank you for expanding on my low tech explanation of the concept.
I wouldn't have guessed as many as 1728 detectors.

My take on the current question is whether a calcium score could be
obtained without such precise imaging. I figure no; good spatial
resolution is a requirement to detect localized absorption sites
like arterial calcium deposits.

Regarding patents: one can do a Boolean search at the US Patent
and Trademark site --
uspto.gov
Get 35 hits on "Imatron", and links all the way back to Boyd's
# 4,352,021 "X-Ray transmission scanning system and method and
electron beam X-ray scan tube for use therewith," 9/28/1982.

These patent descriptions give a glimpse into how complicated
the development of EBCT has been.
