I like the guys who operate on a big scale. Chuck Sheffield (Web between the Worlds and Between the Strokes of Night are good). Greg Bear (Eon, Forge of God, Anvil of Stars. Moving Mars. All excellent.) Larry Niven and his whole Known Space franchise universe. Neutron Star is a MUST read. That has to be my "desert island" sci fi book - the one I'd take if I could only take one. I like optimists. I won't spend time with the downers unless the sheer integrity of their fictional landscape redeems. I won't read Stephen King if you paid me. Or Kafka. That boy needed pills or something. The patch.
