NEC Technologies, Inc. and Thomson-CSF Semiconducteurs Specifiques (TCS), a designer and manufacturer of image sensors, dedicated integrated circuits and microprocessors, announced their plans to develop user authentication solutions based on Thomson's FingerChip), a new biometric sensor technology that eliminates the need for passwords.

Veridicom Inc. and Phoenix Technologies Inc. revealed plans to integrate Veridicom's OpenTouch software into Phoenix' PC BIOS. The combination will provide a level of protection to computer systems by requiring users to give a fingerprint, rather than a password, to boot up a computer.

TrueTouch Technologies announced today the release of its Biometric Authentication Application Programmers Interface . Originally previewed during November of 1997, and demonstrated extensively since then throughout the U.S.

Hewlett-Packard Co. said it plans to implement biometric security features into its product line next year. Scanners that identify and authenticate users via fingerprints will ship for use with HP's OmniBook laptop line by early 1999, said Stacey Wueste, marketing manager for OmniBook notebook PCs at HP, Palo Alto, Calif. The technology will be offered as an accessory, first for mobile PCs and later for desktop systems, she said.

Keyware Technologies of Woburn, MA announced that it joined the International Biometric Industry Association (IBIA) as a charter member. The aim of the IBIA, of Washington, D.C., is to educate decision makers and direct initiatives relating to biometrics.

Keyware Technologies of Woburn, MA was recently awarded the Voice+ Award for the Best Mobile Solution" in London, England at "Voice Europe '98." Voice Europe officials are recognized worldwide as leading authorities on speech technologies. Representatives from Keyware's European headquarters in Brussels, Belgium were on hand to receive the prestigious award for Keyware's VoiceGuardianTM product.

Keyware Technologies and Brussels and BelSign, the principal Certification Authority (CA) in Europe, announced a joint collaboration to integrate their respective technologies. BelSign's digital certificates are electronic identity cards for digital transactions via the Internet or Intranet. Keyware Technologies contributes its LBV technology to offer additional security.

GEZ Microsystems, Inc. - privately owned consulting firm in Oakville, Ontario, Canada, announces the release of a family of standalone fingerprint enrollment/ verification modules. First set of modules uses Thomson-CSF's FingerChipTM sensor and Motorola's Digital Signal Processor DSP56309. The modules are smallest in [G1]the industry and have dimensions of only 1.5''x1.7''x.5'' and require a single 5 volts, .25 amperes power supply. The suggested price for very small quantities is US $250.00. Demo modules will be on display at the CardTech/SecurTech Exhibition and Conference in San Jose, California on December 8-9, 1998.
