the most intresting question of what SGI has to offer isn't the price, it's what will distribution and marketing of this newbox/newOS/new market/new capability look like and act like.
from the specs that appeared and quickly disappeared from this forum, features such as 400mbs 1394 and wide fast bandwidth in a box that supports generic sub $1K video editing software pits this machine head to head with Apple's January offerings.
SGI has focused on uncompressed D1 and film applications up til now. if they are sucessful, the success will be in sales to market segments and tiers they have never dealt with, and for the most part have held in contempt.
if SGI has weeded out the hubris and distaste for the unwashed, this launch will be a historic success.
if SGI's culture looks down on borg buyers as second class customers, doom and gloom will be the story.
