This is an interesting week to look at what has happened to each
individual stock in the group of 41 since its close on 4/25/97, a
period of approximately 19 months. On 4/25/97, the group average
closed at 760. This Friday the group average closed at 755 - a
difference of approximately 0.7 percent. Since the average is so
close, the question of interest is how each individual stock within
the group has fared. The table below shows the answer, sorted by
percent change from best to worst performance.

Out of the group of 41, 15 stocks were up, 1 stayed the same, and 25
were down. The spread was very wide, going all the way from NVLS
with a gain of 104 percent, to ASEC with a loss of 84 percent.
Fifteen of the stocks at the bottom of the table have losses of
greater than 30 percent for the period. Keep in mind, the group
average on 4/25/97 was the low point for the year. However, that is
not to say that each individual stock in the group had its low point
for the year on that date. The chances are it was some other date
around that period. While the group average was essentially the same
over the period, the SOX-X was up 33 percent.
