Thanks for the response, WTC.

re: "Maybe you have some forward movement on cable modems, finally ..."

Ha, ha. I had to laugh when I read your closing comment in light of your foregoing response. You don't paint a pretty picture for a telco solution, do you?

You imply an understanding of telco capital outlays that I do not possess. My only response is that today, the issues facing ILEC is not "situation normal."

I would suspect that my ILEC will avoid expending the capital until they are threatened with competition from the cablecos. In my area, if they don't respond they will eventually lose a substantial percentage of the residential customers up here. I really don't know if around 400 homes means something to the PacBell Beverly Hills CO or not. But in my own conversations with several reps I do sense a more intent interest (fear) when I tell them that "once the cablecos are up here with Internet access, telephony will not be far behind -- that w/o a pipeline for data over the copper in the street, their customer base will eventually disappear."

That's not to mention the competition for the wireless companies. With cable & wireless alternatives for telephonic communications, these ILECs who are unwilling to invest will lose out. The issue is whether they want to fight a particular battle. In my situation, maybe they don't. We shall see.
