>>How do we reconcile these competing needs--the need to uphold fairness and morality, and the need not to destroy ourselves by establishing impossible standards for our leaders?<<

Obviously, fairness and morality need to be upheld. It is for this reason that I support the idea of censuring Clinton.

Clinton intentionally misled and deceived the American people. For this he should be punished.

But the IMPORTANT point is that impeachment is not and was never intended to be a punishment. It was not set up to be a punishment. If we feel that Clinton should be punished, then that is an issue ENTIRELY ASIDE from the issue of whether or not Clinton should be impeached.

Impeachment was set up as a means of removing from office someone who poses a direct threat to our nation.

We can say that Clinton has let us down; we can say that we do not approve of Clinton's actions; we can even say that Clinton is not a good person. We cannot say that he poses a direct threat to us.

And therefore, he should not be impeached. This is why I feel that the impeachment hearings are the equivalent of someone spitting on the Constitution.
