Hi Bruce, Happy Holiday's! Yes, the pipe get hot and while cooling they tend to make a creaking sound while they cool off. Normally caused by a careless plumber that didn't take the time to insulate the pipes with plastic insulators to keep the pipes away from the wood. Also, depending on how old your house is, ( Newer than 18 years, you probably have plastic ABS drain lines and these too will make a noise that sounds like cracking if they had hot water draining through them. Nothing to worry about but can be annoying some times. Let me know if this helps and if not, please give me a little more info and I'm sure we can figure it out. Kenny
