Happy Holiday's!
Yes, the pipe get hot and while cooling they tend to make a creaking sound while they cool off. Normally caused by a careless plumber that didn't take the time to insulate the pipes with plastic insulators to keep the pipes away from the wood. Also, depending on how old your house is, ( Newer than 18 years, you probably have plastic ABS drain lines and these too will make a noise that sounds like cracking if they had hot water draining through them. Nothing to worry about but can be annoying some times.
