He had to resign as speaker since he lost the support of many of those who selected him.
While it is true that Newt lost support and chose to resign rather than play ordinary congressman, Livingston stumbled in the linguistic traps set for Clinton. Once the republican rhetoric had become black or white, virtue or demon, Livingston as a mere human could not measure up.

If the rhetoric does not cool soon the Democrats are likely to regain the House by default as the Republicans are exposed as normal people instead of paragons of virtue. They will force each other out while the Democrats will feel no such compulsion.
