I don't think Livingston should have resigned
I have heard that Livingston was going to retire last year. He was persuaded on the right by those who were afraid the republican majority would be gone, so they agreed to grant him a leadership post of some kind. He was also persuaded by those on the left who were worried that David Duke would become republican standard bearer for that district. They also agreed that if he would run one more time they would support him for a leading role (It was not clear that he would become speaker until Newt flew the coop). I wonder if he told any of them about the potential time bomb in his past?
