Hello Everyone!

I just wanted to add some comments to some of this diatribe between Paul and myself. I feel this is important while somewhat off topic.

MSFT has a future planned for all of us end users but they haven't just figured out a way to sell the idea to us. They have to some degree but not the full court press they want.

Right now you can log on to MSFT's website and download free software. You can even buy some there too. What MSFT wants is that we get ALL of our MSFT software via download. They want to do away with the shrink-wrapped boxes and even the CDs. They want to remove the middlemen, the channels and resellers from tapping "their" revenue stream.

What they envision is an era whereby end users log on to their e-commerce websites, point&click which programs, add-ons etc they want and make the purchase. Then, users can download the software.

Sounds great now doesn't it? You want the MS Office upgrade, log on, input credit card info and viola! Download is complete! You want to add some functions to your Excel program, log on and download!

What gets me worried is this...they also want to modularize all their software so say you want to purchase MS Word but you only want (and need) certain functions. You only pay for the ones you want and then download.

You think to yourself, "This is great! Finally I don't have to pay for all that garbage I don't want (and need) in the first place".

Until one day you get an email bulletin or letter in the mail saying that you need to purchase and download certain modules so that your software is up-to-date. MSFT will hide code in certain DLLS (as they have MSIE so they can integrate the browser with Windows 98) so that you will be FORCED to buy upgrades and patches.

They have a history of doing this -- If you think I'm trying to paint MSFT as the "evil empire" that's fair. I've seen what they've done with concurrent licensing with their MS Office product. It's costing corporations million$ more in licenses now than in the past. Why the change? It only fills the pockets of MSFT for no benefit to the consumer (or user).

Thanks for the time.
