Strike one: Java has the JDB database interface class specificatin
In addition Java Beans will add ActiveX and more important
the CORBA Objects (because this is the standard not ActiveX,several indicate that ActiveX will be dead within
a year, because MSFT still has not learned how to play the
standards game).
Strike two: JIT compiler technology has progressed significantly
Strike three: remember NCs will use Java for cross platform operation
no matter what the hardware (including PDA, etc.)
Strike four: the Java Corel Office Suite is reported to be a killer
Strike five: I do not think Sun and Oracle want to be anything
like MSFT on the quality side (good old Micro$lop) that
does not mean that they would not like to have their
financial might.

From the standards body process the battle has already been won (even though MSFT would like us to believe that it has not been). Java is the standard, MSFT may come up with a better JIT or some other non-innovation gimmick, but MSFT has definitely lost the standards and hearts of software developers (the real key) battle due to Java.
