Push for farmers' education

FARMERS will get additional long-term support as educational institutions help inject agro-technologies into rural areas.

Regional education institutions are required to accelerate vocational and adult education development, to help young and
adult people learn farming skills, according to a regulation issued yesterday by the Ministry of Education.

Vocational schools will do more to spread techniques for planting and breeding and how to make high-value-added farm
products, the regulation states.

The regulation urged agricultural colleges to regularly introduce advanced agro-technology into rural areas.

The Broadcast and Television School of the Central TV College will help teach about 2,000 farming skills in rural areas
through radio and television programmes, video compact disks and computer networks, said the school's official Zhang
Shaogang.

The school will make more easy-to-learn farming skills programmes, such as water-saving irrigation and fine seed
cultivation techniques to help farmers get richer, said Zhang.

The school was set up in 1990 to step up educational reforms in rural areas. Its educational programmes have covered 22
provinces and more than half of China's counties.
