Techie, <Can you read??? Who the hell....>
You certainly got flamed for nothing.

I do have a strong disagreement with you about Zip disks not being
able to take a big market share from CDROM because CDROM is so
cheap (10-12 cents you said) to make.

I understand that currently zip disks cost $2-3 to make. As volume
increased drastically, it is conceivable that cost should be driven to
less than $1 per disk.

But for the sake of argument, say zip disks will cost $5/disk at retail.
Most of the software packages I buy cost between $30 and $500.
So what if I have to pay $35 to $505 for them. For only $5 more I get
the speed, much better performance, run programs directly from zip
drive, and a re-usable zip disk when the software becomes obsolete.
I'll curse less, lessen my use of profanity, and my blood pressure will
improve - things I often do while waiting for 3.5 floppy and CDROM
to crank along.

As along as the consumers are willing to pay, the software developers
and OEMs don't care at all about Zip or CDROM as the medium.
Thanks to great competition, they all have to provide what the
consumers want.
