Cheeky Kid -

The Hare virus panic illustrates the continuing need for more and more media criticism, particularly when it comes to technology stories.

Unclear on the point you're trying to make here...

From where I sit, the media is well along the path of CREATING an unnecessary panic with their "planes falling from the sky" and "head for the hills with guns" stories. Such nonesense makes for eye catching headlines but are 99.9% bogus.

Unfortunately the public really doesn't have the ability to know how off base these increasingly popular media stories are.

Writing stories about the hard work that backoffice folks are doing to prevent Y2K snafus simply isn't considered good story material.
