Cisco Systems shares rose as much as 3.9 percent amid expectations that growth in Internet use and Internet-based commerce will mean higher sales and profit at the No. 1 network-equipment maker.
Cisco shares rose 3 1/4 to 93 11/16 in early trading of 1.71 million after touching a record 94. Last week, the stock rose 8.3 percent.
Stephen Koffler, an analyst at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette Securities, said Cisco's stock price is too low relative to other companies such as online bookseller Amazon.com and portal Yahoo, which are expected to benefit as consumers and companies use the Internet more.
[Mohan-Compared to Amazon,Yahoo not only Cisco is too low but Dell is too low as well,no?]
San Jose, California-based Cisco makes the routers and other equipment that channel data across the Internet and other computer networks.
"There's a major shift going on in terms of productivity and pricing that the Internet can drive," said Koffler, who rates Cisco his "top pick." "Without Cisco, there is no Internet."
