11 Firms Call For Standardizing
Advanced Cell Phones

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Eleven Japanese and foreign companies,
including NTT Mobile Communications Network Inc. (9437),
issued a joint statement Friday calling for creation of a global
standard for next-generation cellular phones.

The move came after the International Telecommunication Union
showed reluctance to proceed with standardization. ITU is
concerned over disputes among European and U.S. telephone
makers over acquiring patents for a global standard.

The statement calls for five points such as an introduction of
advanced cellular phones at the earliest opportunity. It also
demands the establishment of regulations for radio
communications technology so consumers can use cellular
phones worldwide under a uniform standard.

Other participants in the statement include Japan Telecom Co.
(9434), Nissan Motor Co. (7201) and British
Telecommunications Plc.
