I do not think this is a waste of money. If Lucent can, through PR and advertising, convince the general public that they are the market leader then regardless of the actual facts anyone who contracts another firm will be doing business with someone considered second rate. The ads are not there to sell the contracts directly - they are there to sell them indirectly.

My two cents. Besides, if there was no payoff then Intel, Lucent, and for that matter all public utilities companies are foolish. There is a payoff but it is a little bit more complex than what first meets the eye.
