One word: Sunbeam.

"Chainsaw Al" proved not to be a Rambo in pinstripes but an emperor with no clothes. By the time the board realized this guy was buck naked the company was restating its financials and for all intents and purposes was in ruins.

On the tech side, Redbrick-REDB once an $80 stock recently swallowed by Informix for pocket change comes to mind. Can't forget PMTC either (I'm sure those who bought Parametric in the $70 range never will). Also losers in the networking wars, such as (long gone) SHVA and (still bumbling along) CS certainly deserve mention.

I suppose an offshoot of this thread could be high-flyers which turned out to be accounting-related debacles. Sunbeam fits this bill of course, and smaller accouting-related booms: Vista 2000, a top pick of AAII in 1996; Fine Host; etc. And who can forget outright scams like Bre-x and Centennial Technologies...
