Hi O'49er,

My recommendations for Y2k:

1. Oatmeal: highest in fat and protein of all the grains (no cholesterol, though). A weightlifter could probably live off the stuff. Buy fresh and store airtight; it keeps indefinitely. Easily digestible without cooking, but added to boiling water and covered, it doesn't require simmering. Consumes a minimum of fuel.

2. Steam Cracked Wheat, (Bulgar): Nutritious whole grain wheat. Bulgar will absorb water without cooking to become fluffy and deliciously edible. Just store it in a dry place.

3. Get yourself one of those lightweight portable filtration pumps that backpackers use below timberline or in 3rd world countries. That way you can drink out of a ditch if you absolutely have to.

4. Get several of those "space blankets" that hikers use to conserve body heat in an emergency. You should probably have some of these in your car, anyway.

If you wake up on January 1, 2000 and everything looks ok disaster-wise, you can take all that stuff and go live in the wilderness, so you can experience what it would have been like.
