Interesting examples, David. The thing many people fail to realize (I'm not including you, here) is that even if everything goes A-OK, hunky-dorey, peachy-keen, whatever good with Year 2000, the herd-like reaction of people will still occur to a certain degree in the stock market, currency withdrawals, hoarding, etc.

I think people naturally, and probably sanely, look at it as, "Right or wrong, I don't want to be last in line!".
