Brian, Since none of these companies have really made any money (excluding CMGI and a few others), I don't understand the valuations. Companies like Barnes and Noble and egghead, before it became web-based, never really made that much money (in fact, EGGS lost money) so what makes anyone think companies like AMZN and EGGS, et. al. can make money now. Operating costs may be lower because of the efficiency gained by the web. However, I think the ease of moving from one site to another on the internet will only result in more competition which I believe will result in lower margins over time. Books and software just aren't that profitable. I don't see how these companies are going to make significant profits over an extended period. I do not plan on "investing" in any of these companies, with the exception of AOL. However, I will continue to jump in and out of positions keeping a very close eye on them. JMHO.
