[Market action. . .and a case for Lucent]
Louie --
I agree that someone's been hammering AMTX ruthlessly for weeks now. If it's the Soros Group, I wonder how we can fight the wolves at the door if we're in bed with them.
As for LU and DMT, I've been developing my own theory on this for nearly a year and until recently I didn't think there was another soul anywhere who'd even given it a thought. It still may be nothing---I don't know how it even came up today---but I've maintained all along there had to be some reason Lucent sold Paradyne and at some point there had to be a way for them to commercialize their ADSL without alienating their former colleagues. I'm a little sketchy on AT&T's history, but didn't Bell Labs originate there? At any rate, I know 1) that Dr. Cioffi worked on CAP *and* DMT at Bell Labs and knows many of their engineers and scientists, 2) that as early as last May Don Lucas and Jim Gibbons were discussing ways for LU to save face in the Standards battle, 3) that both companies are presently working with NEC in Asia, 4) that IBM's Information System is partnered with LU, and 5) that their ADSL director knows an awful lot about Amati's modems.
Granted this is very sketchy evidence to base a compatibility case on, but even if none of these points is valid, we still have to figure out Lucent's place in the ADSL universe.
As potential partners, what ways would they fit and what ways wouldn't they?
Have at it!!
