I've read all the posts here and would like to make a few points.
One just because an OS is superior does not necessarily mean that it will succeed. Witness O/S 2.
Second, the decision to go with NeXT is not a cop-out for BEos, it was a sound business decision based on a fairer price for a much better tested and developed system.
Third, Apple's install base, though somewhat uncertain and shaky due to the current condition of the company, is very loyal, is earnestly interested in the company making the corner, and most importantly has several niches which are pretty strong, and according to our creatives, highly unlikely to be unseated (pun intended) any time soon.
Lastly, there are those who've posted messages suggesting that MSFT is interested in keeping Apple afloat due to monopoly issues. This is pretty far fetched, MSFT doesn't do anything without looking at their long term strategy, "to dominate the marketplace", and Apple does get in the way, especially in some school markets and in creative environments.
I am looking at Apple, like the rest of you and trying to decipher where it will go, at some point we will hit bottom and it will become a buy: IF and only IF: they lay out a long term strategy for niche marketing and market domination in that/those niche markets.
