More bad news for Ballard: Today's WSJ article on Honda introducing a gas/electric hybrid that gets 70 mpg and beats the strictest emission standards in the world. That works out to better than a fuel cell car will be able to do, and this will be sold nationwide in 1999, not promised maybe for 2004. It won't need recharging, and the fuel is plain old gasoline running in a super clean internal combustion engine. As I expected, no one here dared to discuss any of the issues raised in my post #3428 about why methanol is doomed as a fuel for fc cars. Gasoline is probably worse - the infrastructure is there, but it holds so little hydrogen and the heat requirements are so great that a fc car trying to reform gasoline will probably be dirtier and less efficient than conventional car. On the Yahoo thread "Rickmas" did a great job of explaining this the other day. For a further discussion of why methanol powered fc cars are a fantasy: messages.yahoo.com@m2.yahoo.com For those who just want to read a summary rather than the reasoning, methanol and hydrogen involve massive infrastructure costs no one is likely to undertake, while gasoline results in an inferior product. What is left? Nothing but wishful thinking.
