Thats exactly the point Melissa. For everybody elses application, you have SQL at
the data layer

What do you mean "everybody elses" Michelle??? R/3's application uses std SQL at the
data layer. There is no difference between SAP or anybody else on this layer.

…and a client of some sort sitting on top. With Sap you have this thing (Abap)
in between.

No, most likely it is the same concept as the other vendors designs. Except SAP uses
a programming language called ABAP to compile and execute transactions.
There is no additional LAYER. Oracle or Peoplesoft use a different language.

Maybe this will help:

+---------------------+
| External vendor | <---(R/3 not needed here)

+-----------------------+ sql +-------------------------+
| SQL Database | <------------> | R/3 controlled by ABAP |
+----------------------------+ +--------------------------------+
| Operating System | | Operating System |
