Transformers can be replaced by other technologies - There is a big effort underway to replace transformers with alternative solid state isolation technologies. For example, a small company in Austin just announced they were selected by COMS for such technology. Lucent must have known this when they sold their assets. Any communications hardware engineer wants to eliminate the front end analog section with solid state components.
