More good news... diversification of customer base and different application of Flash product than what I am used to reading about. Note the quotes about why they chose SNDK - does not need additional drivers and durability of product.
Tuesday December 22, 11:00 am Eastern Time Company Press Release SanDisk Will Supply Intermec With FlashDrives for New Ruggedized Norand Industrial Computer FlashDrives Start to Replace Disk Drives in Low-Capacity Applications Requiring Less Power, More Reliability SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 22, 1998-- SanDisk Corporation (Nasdaq:SNDK - news) announced today that the Norand Mobile Systems Division of Intermec Technologies Corporation has designed its new Norand® PEN-KEY® 6560 fixed mount industrial computer with SanDisk's 2.5-inch, 60 megabyte (MB) FlashDrive.
The new Windows® 95 based computer is designed for applications in industrial settings requiring sealed enclosure, industrial design and enterprise networking connectivity.
The new Norand PEN-KEY 6560 industrial computer includes a large self-contained 10.4-inch color LCD providing display output and touch-screen input. A full range of I/O (input/output) options include two serial ports, a parallel port, external VGA support and an integrated RJ-45 Ethernet.
''Remote depots typically have minimal IT support and, over time, can experience disk problems due to movement, power outage, dust, moisture and other damaging environmental conditions. One of our design objectives for the 6560 was to offer an alternative to spinning disk media, which cannot withstand these industrial conditions,'' said Mike Colwell, director of marketing for Intermec's Norand Mobile Systems Division. ''The SanDisk FlashDrive met the requirements which this computer and its hardware required. This device does not need separate PC Card (PCMCIA) drivers but can make use of the existing IDE drive interface. This simplifies the interface required for secondary storage.''
''Flash memory has proven to be the ultimate solution for data storage in rugged industrial environments,'' said Jeff Ellerbruch, product manager at SanDisk. ''Available in standard 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch sizes, our FlashDrives are excellent hard drive replacements in computers which are designed to be used in rugged, industrial conditions.''
SanDisk FlashDrives range in capacity between 20MB and 440MB. SanDisk's leading distributors include Arrow, Avnet and Bell Microproducts.
SanDisk Corporation, the world's largest supplier of flash data storage products, designs, manufactures and markets industry-standard, solid-state data, digital imaging and audio storage products using its patented, high density flash memory and controller technology. SanDisk is based in Sunnyvale.
