Company Press Release

Computer Associates Named a 'Best Company to Work for in America' by FORTUNE Magazine

Software Leader Honored For Promoting Employee-Friendly Corporate Policies

ISLANDIA, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 22, 1998-- Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA) has been cited as one of FORTUNE magazine's ''100 Best Companies to Work for in America.'' The list, which will appear in the magazine's January 11 issue, was compiled through interviews with more than 20,000 randomly selected employees at scores of companies nationwide.

Editors cited training courses, stock options, free health and dental plan, an on-site Montessori-based child development center, on-site fitness centers and free daily breakfasts as among the benefits available to CA employees.

''Ultimately, CA is in the business of innovation, and innovations come from people,'' said Deborah Coughlin, CA senior vice president of human resources. ''Creating a work environment that attracts talent and nurtures it is essential for any business whose success is based on the excellence of the people it employs.''

FORTUNE collaborated with authors Robert Levering and Milton Moskowitz to compile the list, using methodology similar to that used for their book, ''The 100 Best Companies to Work for in America.'' To be eligible, a company had to be at least 10 years old and have a minimum of 500 employees. Candidates were rated on a 175-point scale, based on responses from an employee survey, written comments, a questionnaire and supporting materials.

''Our job of choosing the 100 Best was very challenging this year,'' said Levering. ''The competition was very rigorous, which is why it is such a prestigious honor to be on the list. CA and other companies on the list should be very proud of their achievements and workplace practices.''

The award is the latest in a series given to CA for its workplace environment, including being named one of the ''100 Best Places To Work In IS'' for four consecutive years by ComputerWorld. CA has also been recognized by Working Mother Magazine as a top 100 company for working mothers, and by the U.S. Department of Labor Women's Bureau for the advancement of women. In August, Industry Week magazine named CA one of the world's 100 best-managed companies.

Computer Associates International, Inc. (NYSE:CA - news), with headquarters in Islandia, N.Y., is the world leader in mission-critical business software. The company develops, licenses and supports more than 500 integrated products that include enterprise computing and information management, application development, manufacturing and financial applications. CA has more than 11,000 people in 160 offices in 43 countries and had revenue of $4.7 billion in fiscal year 1998.
