DMG - I guess I'm somewhat skeptical of the idea that the operators are being spoon fed and don't know what's going on.

While I certainly don't know for a fact that they [the operators] are being spoonfed, from my reasonably extensive experience it would be pretty easy to do. Normally the only reason companies don't do it is that eventually they would get caught with their pants down (either by the company bidding against them, or when they actually have to build it). My guess is that Ericsson made the calculation that Qualcomm was too small to force a showdown.

PS Just for the record, I do not know independently of this board how NTT-DoCoMo is planning to use their upgrade to 3g. However I do know that they have very high teledensities. Although I imagine there is an optimal way for NTT to upgrade, the things that they probably really want in a 3g system (like network compatibility to whatever system they have in place) are out of the question anyway. The real issue is that they need more capacity.
