I think that index funds need to own the basket of stocks. They don't generally time stocks, they buy and hold them. By 12/31 they need to have this stock in their portfolio or run the risk of lagging the S&P500.

IMO, we have more upside ahead. Meanwhile, the moves of the last few days will surely induce some to take gains, especially after Jan 1st (new tax year).
