>>Analysts were unsure of the reason for the steep rise, which was not accompanied by any news from Ubid. Officials at the company declined comment saying they were still in a quiet period following the IPO.

''I wish I had known about this yesterday,'' commented one Internet retail analyst who said the stock gain took him by surprise.

Nicole Vanderbilt, director of digital commerce at Jupiter Communications, said the gain appeared to be related to a deal struck earlier this week between Ubid's competitor, Onsale Inc., (Nasdaq:ONSL - news) and Yahoo Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO - news).

In that deal, announced on Monday, Onsale agreed to provide links to the Small Business pages on Yahoo as a way to broaden its reach. Yahoo is the most visited Internet directory or ''portal.''

''The Ubid rise today seems to be because of Onsale and their deal with Yahoo,'' Vanderbilt said. ''For lack of better information, investors tend to reward like-stocks.''<<
