Hi Skeeter Bug; Yeah, of course programmables compete with ASICs.

Back when I was a designer for Renaissance GRX, I did a XC2064 design. Management had agreed to replace it with an ASIC. But Xilinx kept dropping the price (down to about $2), so management delayed replacing the XLNX part. Eventually it did get replaced. If a part can be replaced by another part, then the manufacturers compete. Simple enough.

Rather than refer to someone's opinion as "naive", I would prefer to use the somewhat more flattering description of: "wrong."
