the pc demand paradigm is falling apart. ingram micro warned and hwp lowered prices up to 20% and toshiba reduced laptops 14%. intel is roaring - though eps are still below 1996 levels.

Not at all. The indirect paradigm is hurting, so Ingram and HP (which admitted it is way behind in selling from their website) squirm while CPQ goes direct and Dell and INTC clean up. Nothing at all wrong with PC demand if you're selling it right, particularly the 350 or 450mhz Pentium-based systems in the $1500 to $1800 range.
