Andrew Martin says

>>As for Nicaragua, I know more in my sleep about the Sandanistas, the Contras and the fight which brought democracy back to Nicaragua than any of the women on this thread.<<

Is that right, Mr. Martin? You are making yourself look a little silly here. As a journalist AND a volunteer working with Christian organizations for the poor in Managua in 1989 and 1990 I was an internationalist observer of the elections. As such, I was very familiar with the first election. I know how the people of Nicaragua felt and I know how the Northamericans living in Nicaragua felt.

If you "know more in your sleep" about this situation it is because of your selective reading or possibly just your believing what you WANT to believe. The Sandinistas accomplished more for Nicaragua in a few years than the U.S.-backed dictatorships or the later U.S.-backed coalitions have for over a hundred years. Go look at statistics for infant mortality, pure water, free grade school education, illiteracy.

PLEASE stop posting things you are utterly ignorant about. The only fight that "brought democracy back to Nicaragua" resulted in the 1979 overthrow of Somoza by the Sandinistas. That was the people's first breath of democracy in decades. Your later "freedom fighters" were murderers and terrorists. The people in Nicaragua were terrified of going into the countryside for fear of being murdered. I could write a lot, but the people not interested in C.A. are not on this thread for that. Suffice it to say that when journalists like myself went into the mountains, we usually requested Sandinista protection.

But they were voted out. Yes, they were. Because the U.S. implied that the embargo would be lifted if they voted as the U.S. told them, so they chose Violeta. They are a VERY poor country and voted their pocketbooks And even Violeta Chamorro was betrayed. The U.S. dollars never came. You do surely know that according to the United Nations, we owe Nicaragua vast amounts of money. They will never get it despite a World Court judgment against us.
