Tom,

You sound very knowledgeable on the data side. Actually you sound like a CSCO employee. The major point that the people I was talking to stated is that ALL the data networkers will do well because their competitive edge does not last very long.

The other factor that you need to consider are the voice suppliers. Most people only hear of Lucent but Siemens and Nortel will be heard from before all is said and done. Over the next couple of years, there will be a number of mergers between voice and data players.

The data companies may have large market caps but the voice players have deep pockets (cash). You cannot just look at market caps and say an equal or smaller market cap company will not take over the other (there are examples of this happening). When doing mergers the competitive market place advantage will be the major factor. A merger of LU and CSCO would be called a MERGER OF EQUALS.

I am not bias towards anyone of these stocks. Actually I own most of them because I believe that these companies as well as selected telephony stocks will do very well.

My background is that I worked (up until last friday) for a major telephony company that buys networking equipment from all these suppliers. The technology of these companies is not the major factor of why we buy from these companies.

The alternative business relationships are far more important. For example, CSCO was considerably behind the other data network companies in '98 but we continued to do business with them because of other factors. I cannot elaborate any further because of announcements that will be made in the January/February time frame.
