I'd like to second the wish for the optomists being right. Nothing would please me more.

I just had a conversation with a representative from our local rural power utility. I had called and left a message the other day asking for them to send a representative to a community meeting in mid-January. The purpose of the meeting is strictly informational.
We are having the head of the county emergency agency, a representative from the regional trauma center, and the power folks up for a little chat. The goal is to provide people with as good as information as possible straight from the source.

Anyway, it was an interesting phone conversation. I felt like the poor guy was between a rock and a hard place. They know they have to send someone because not to do so would surely send the wrong message and raise concerns and suspicions....BUT.... it sure seemed like there was NO WAY he was going to come out and say, "No worries, there will be power." He hemmed, he hawed, he made several beat around the bushed comments about how they were working on things. He finally said they would talk it over among the management team and see who they could send and what they could say.

All they have to do is show-up and say, "Yes, we guarantee there will be no y2k power disruptions." I don't think they will do it. Perhaps, they should talk to the optomist here for support.
