A search for Pokemon on EBay today (12/23) came up with 414 auctions. And, according to an article in the Boston Globe (12/12), Pokemon Game Boys are actually ringing up bigger retail sales than Furby.
For a stock play on Pokemon, check out 4 Kids Entertainment (KIDE). KIDE is Nintendo's exclusive, worldwide (except Japan) licensing agent for all Pokemon spin-off merchandise. In Japan, Pokemon merchandise produced an incredible $4 billion in sales in less than two years. Based on the popularity of the U.S. Pokemon TV show and U.S. Game Boy sales, Pokemon merchandise sales should be huge in the U.S.
There's more! KIDE's Nintendo contract means they will also be able to license spin-off merchandise for The Legend of Zelda (currently, the hottest selling N64 video game). Plus, KIDE has a licensing deal with Turner/Time Warner for World Championship Wrestling (WCW) merchandise.
KIDE's CEO, Al Kahn (the guy behind the Cabbage Patch Kids mania) has
forecast that KIDE's 1998 earnings will "exceed" $.70 per share, mostly from WCW licensing royalties. Next year's earnings should be double or triple that as the Pokemon and Zelda royalties really begin hitting KIDE's bottom line.
KIDE has only 3 million shares and is selling for about $10 a share. In my opinion, KIDE is an undiscovered gem, with a tremendous upside potential. See the link below for KIDE's press releases. KIDE also has good Yahoo and SI message boards.
