<I have a 56K modem and have never gotten a connect speed above 26.4K due to the limitations of my 'last mile.' Still, a 26K connection is tolerable compared to the < 1K bottlenecks I frequently get when contacting busy servers. If the backbone can't support it, what difference does it make if the masses have high bandwidth connections? > I am probably wrong, but it seems logical that a "bigger spigot" (ADSL) at the start of the 'last mile' would get rid of some of those bottlenecks because the routers/servers could forward data much quicker and not be tied down "spoon feeding" a modem.
