The VSE reports that the short position on SGI dropped from 267,000 on Friday, January 10th, to 209,300 on Friday, January 17th.

During the week in question SGI went from $15.10 down to $12.50 and back up to $15.50 on Friday. The shorts may have covered at the lower prices, but the daily house position indicates that the main shorters were actually net sellers for the week, so the drop in the short position came as a surprise to me.

The VSE receives a report every Monday from every member house with the short position as of the previous Friday. The information is compiled on Tuesday and released on Wednesday morning.

According to the VSE, the information is currently not available in any web site, but is published on the Vancouver Sun. Unless you live in B.C. it would be hard to find the Vancouver Sun at your local corner store, so your best bet would be to call the VSE after 9:30 EST. If you are willing to wait until 6 PM EST, you can still call them at evening long distance rates. Their number is (604)-689-3334 and ask to be transferred to Surveillance.
