After reading "Owning a stock and buying a put", go to the CBOE site and choose the strike price and expiry month which would suit you best. You would buy 1 option (put) for each 100 shares you chose to protect. The CBOE does not start trading until 9:45 am est, so you cannot buy options on the open of the NYSE. Hope this helps, Merry Christmas.
