Do you hold shares through a broker? If so, the company doesn't know that you're a stockholder because your broker no doubt has the shares registered in "street name." You may need to have a share registered out in your name in order to get started with the company DRIP. Our broker is pretty good about registering shares out in our name; they don't charge for certificates, but some charge $10-15 or even more. Of course we pay a bit more in commissions, but it all seems to work out well for us. It isn't that often anymore that we get into a new DRIP anyway -- and the last two, we have swapped shares with friends, so the charges have been minimal.
