Paul,

I see things a little differently from you.

I see an Intel which was rapidly falling into third place in the retail market, and has been forced to take the somewhat desperate step of pushing Celeron 400's out the door many months ahead of schedule.

I see an Intel which is likely to drop to second place in the performance race in the coming months. (2MB L2 is only slightly better than 1MB L2 on the desktop.)

I see an Intel which has locked itself into the concept of doing graphics geometry in software, at the same time the rest of the world is moving towards a hardware based solution. This may well turn into Intel's most serious problem for the next couple of years.
