Bert/B&N on one side CdNow/Time Warner on the other, with Wal-Mart pissed. ps I wonder how many shares Bezos sells right before he releases his Xmas #'s? >> NEW YORK, Dec 24 (Reuters) - Time Warner Inc. and CDNow Inc. both declined comment Thursday on an Internet news report that the media giant has considered an investment in the online music retailer.
A Time Warner spokesman said while the company intends to increase its electronic commerce business, it would not comment on the report involving CDNow.
Ziff Davis Net news site quoted a variety of sources as saying the two companies had talks on a Time Warner investment.
According to the report on Dec. 22, some observers believe a Time Warner investment would be a "way to grab" the company's president, Jason Olim, to boost its efforts at expanding its own e-commerce business.
Time Warner chairman Gerald Levin has said he believes there is money to be made in electronic commerce, adding that the company could leverage various direct marketing businesses, as well as publishing operations, to sell more products on the Internet.
On Oct. 23, CDnow and N2K Inc. , two of the biggest players in online music retailing, announced a merger, seen as a way to ward off competitive threats, such as Amazon.com Inc. .
The move would create an Internet music seller with about 1.2 million customers.
