SAP takes over DEC research centre sb20011

FRANKFURT, Dec 23 (Reuters) - Software group SAP AG
SAPG_p.F said on Wednesday that it would take over a research
centre in Karlsruhe with 20 employees that previously belonged
to Digital Equipment Corp.
In a statement, SAP did not disclose a price for the CEC
Karlsruhe but said the deal comes as part of Compaq Computer
Corp's CPQ.N consolidation of Digital Equipment Corp.
Compaq took over Digital earlier this year and is working to
cut 17,000 jobs worldwide, including up to 5,000 in Europe and
about 800 from Digital's German unit.
CEC Karlsruhe was involved in developing interactive kiosk
systems, video archives and Internet commerce software.
"The specific knowledge about distributed systems, Internet
and innovative learning technologies is of very high value to
us," said Karl-Heinz Hess, a member of SAP's management board.
