*OT* Except for French Bashers/Enthusiasts-

A while back we had a heated discussion about why France and the US don't seem to get along. Just in time for a Christmas Eve purchase on Amazon.Com I would like to recommend "Seducing the French: The Dilemma of Americanization" by Richard Kuisel

In brief the story line is one of jealousy, repulsion, and then adaptation by French culture of the best/worst aspects of American culture. All this while the US still jokes about the origins of French Fries. It isn't fair -- as the French see it - to be a world power one minute (before WWII). The next thing you know a bunch of hicks and rubes from over the waves are imposing cultural hegemony on a country that really cares about its culture. The imposers don't even know they have a culture to impose. Again, it isn't fair.

"...a subtle yet lucid account of the Americanisation of the French cultural and political landscape, and of the French reaction to it."

"A fine study of French attitudes toward American and toward the presence of American culture, real and putative...combines careful research into representative episodes with keen analysis and a pleasing style: an unpretenious contribution to important themes."

So, on top of leading edge thinking on technology, legal issues, competitive tactics, wave forms, we can also add "comparative culture" - both Scandinavian/US and France/US to the brew available on the site.
