Delbert this is a long subject but I will try to summarize
for you briefly why the steady state theory simply will not
do: It explains nothing at all. And believe me this is not
a flippant answer. A steady state universe might me pleasing
(it was to me at one time as well) but science is not
about human bias despite what many will have you believe.
Here are a few comments each of which would require a longer
discussion but which can provide just something to think about.

1) The universe is dynamic. A distribution of masses can not
be held in steady state because nothing counteracts gravity.

2) Red-shift measurements show that the universe is expanding
at a speed proportional to the distance from us. Hubbles law.

3) As you look out in the distance you are looking
out in time which means that what you see is very old
and it looks very different in MANY different ways which
means that the universe was different in the past than
it is in the present. Broadly this is very clear even
if specific examples (like quasars but by
no means only quasars) have some wiggle room.

4) The theory of steady state has never been made consistent
not even roughly so. It uses ad-hoc assumptions,
fudge factors, invisible agents, energy violations etc etc
none of which have ever been observed. Think of it
ask any question a see where steady state leads you.
For example how do you replenish stars that die away and what happens
to them? What exactly does steady state mean anyway? What will
happen in the future?

5) It explains nothing.

The big bang has many definite predictions and is a working
theory by contrast. So far contrary to statements in this
thread it has been very succesful and will most likely persist.
