I know I wasn't clear when stating "I'm glad he got caught". Initially I thought it much ado about nothing when the break-in was revealed. It was only after the revelation of the tapes and what was contained on them in detailing his efforts to cover up the break-in; the abuse of power, lying, etc., that turned around my support. For better or worse I am an idealist as well as a pragmatist. If I expect the other side to play fair I expect the same from my side. (I majorly support the police but when I see abuses by the police it sickens me as it would if I saw a family member abusing a person or their position) If Nixon came clean from the beginning and apologized for his minions misunderstanding his intentions it would have blown over in a few weeks.

Overall I think Nixon's presidency was extremely positive, far outweighing any negatives, for even more reasons than you site. When he died I almost threw up when listening to his excoriation by the leftist talk show hosts who likened him to Satan and 'good riddance'. I deplore the left's efforts to smear his term in office, but smearing is their specialty and they're very good at it-especially considering how gullible the public is today.
