I'm sorry, I did a little bit of reading (which I should have done before asking) and found some answers.
For every share of NOR, one now has in addition 0.44 shares of Noranda Forest (NF.TO, closed at 6.00), and 0.25 shares of Canadian Hunter (seems to be trading meanwhile as HTR_w.TO, closed at 9.65).

Based on the above the newly added value today was:
.44 * 6.00 = 2.64
.25 * 9.65 = 2.41

Total 5.05, which works out to a net gain of 0.65 on the day.
The dividend is dropping to .80 but there is the .44 * .40 that NF gives = .176, so if Canadian Hunter will give some sort of dividend as well, we'll be ending ahead on the dividend front as well.

Just curious, what happens to the fractions? Is it the shareholders loss? It happens to work out exactly for me.
